If a 286 machine can power voyager 1 & 2, it is quite possible to gain computer control over many functions of your daily life like voice control over lighting or using an old computer to monitor if your doors or windows have been opened and as i posted above how to create a home video security system, using an out dated computer. I've even made picks out of the thicker stuff. Sheet metal shells are a great supply for when you need a piece of thin metal stronger than your average aluminum stock. The rest gets e-cycled with the motherboards and broken crap. Non-working power supplies I keep the wire, the power regulator chips (just in case some are still good), heat sinks, fans, and shells.

I've seen breakout boards at DIY sites and eBay (of course) that make it easy to do. Still-working power supplies I've repurposed into benchtop power there's at least +/-12V (runs a bipolar op-amp great), +/-5V, +3.3V and Ground (of course), which makes a great power supply for breadboard experiments. Hard drives I keep around for external storage (I have a few USB adapters) until they die, at which point they get taken apart for the magnets, shells (I keep meaning to build low-profile stompboxes with them), and tiny screws. Still-useful peripherals (sound cards, external network and USB hubs, etc) get saved in a box "just in case". I've un-soldered power amp chips from older sound cards and made mini-amps, but not so much anymore because they are either integrated into the motherboard or Surface Mount. Heat sinks from the CPU and power supply can be re-purposed for audio power amps. Motherboards, un-re-usable memory and any broken peripherals get taken to the Goodwill for e-cycling. Here's how I break it down when they get too old for service: I always repurpose our old computers as backup and/or game/media servers, but eventually they break or get too old to be useful. Or alternatively, I can just beat them to a pulp, and send them off with the trash. I intend to trundle them off to Goodwill once I decide what to do with the hard drives. Since we have passwords, and encrypted off shore accounts worth as much as twenty three dollars and seventy nine cents on them, I want to be sure no one raids them. However I read that reinstalling the operating system does not remove all of the old files COMPLETELY. Anyone have any experience with that? Also, Microsoft says just reinstalling the operating system will completely remove all of the files. I read that you can use a program called DBAN to remove everything on the drives.

In fact Windows 10 didn't seem all that much of an improvement. They are old computers and probably not even usable since they had Windows Vista installed, which the entire web hated but worked just fine for us. I have a couple of computers that we replaced some time ago, that my wife keeps impinging on my procrastination and wants me to do something with.
